A Brief Look: Consultation and Its Impact on Treatment
"When something doesn't go in the direction I expect within a reasonable time, we need to rethink. This was challenging because we actually had an excellent direction that had already yielded very good results, but I'm glad that Fred caught the small nuance that made the difference."
This quote is from a physiotherapist, and Fred is the name of another therapist he consulted with. How relevant this simple statement is to our field as well!
Our challenge in the field of mental health treatment is how to incorporate an additional perspective into the therapeutic process. Supervision/guidance are indeed central tools for achieving this goal, but they present us with a significant challenge: the supervisor relies on our report, which is inherently subjective and may miss precisely those critical nuances.
To address this challenge, there are several options:
1. Using recordings: This method allows the supervisor to get a more accurate picture of what happens in therapy.
2. The supervisor's participation in a therapy session: This approach, although even less common, allows for direct observation and immediate intervention.
In every meeting with my physiotherapist, I discover new insights relevant to the world of mental health treatment. This is a reminder of the value of interdisciplinary learning and the importance of openness to ideas from related fields.
